Here’s a quick quiz for you – what is a creature that can eat 5,000 bugs in its lifetime, but does it while looking drop-dead gorgeous all the time? Yes, it’s the pretty ladybug!

Ladybugs are pretty, but those gorgeous colors also serve another purpose – to tell predators that they don’t taste good, and to look for dinner elsewhere!

With spring starting, it’s time for ladybugs to make their appearance. They like the warm weather, and go into hibernation when it starts getting cold. Looks like it’s the apt time for some ladybug crafts, but before that, some fun trivia about ladybugs!

Why are ladybugs called ladybugs?

Apparently, the term was coined by European farmers in ancient times. Their crops were being destroyed by pests, and they prayed to the Virgin Mary for help. They soon found that some good-looking beetles were eating up the pests, thus rescuing the crop. Well, the farmers were ecstatic and they named the beetle “beetle of Our Lady”, which eventually became ‘lady beetle’ and finally ‘ladybug’.

On that fun note, let’s get crafting! All you need are basic craft supplies and some googly eyes – and you’re set!
