Do you know which country has the world’s tallest people? Hint: it’s the same country that has more bicycles than people!

Yes, we’re talking about the Netherlands!

Dutch is the flavor of the season, since it’s their national holiday this month – Koningsdag, or King’s Day, which falls on 26th April. As the name suggests, this is the birthday of the current monarch, King Willem-Alexander. And before you ask, yes, if the monarch is a woman, it’s known as Koninginnedag or Queen’s Day!

How is Koningsdag celebrated?

  • During Koningsdag, the Dutch have a nationwide flea market where they can sell second-hand goods. It’s the only day when street sales are allowed without a government permit and taxes.
  • Since orange is the national color of the Netherlands, people wear orange clothing, drink orange beverages and even dye their hair orange! This is referred to as oranjegekte, or ‘Orange Madness’!
  • Several special events are held for the occasion, like concerts, parades or street parties, especially in Amsterdam
  • Children play games like koekhappen and spijker poepen, which involve tying objects to strings and trying to catch them
  • During Koningsdag, the Dutch King honors citizens who’ve made major contributions to their country

If you’re not in the Netherlands and can’t participate in these events, don’t worry – we’ve got something for you! Here are some fun Netherlands crafts for kids to help you learn more about the culture of this amazing country!
