Here’s a beautiful, sparkling Star Wand Pencil Topper Craft to add some magic to your New Year celebrations! It also makes a great gift for friends!
Let’s suppose you have magical powers and would like to turn a specific person into a cat. However, that person is in the middle of a crowd. You lift your hand, chant a spell and whoosh!! You now have an entire clowder of cats!
That’s because your spell didn’t hit right, which is why you need a magic wand for more specific results!
The History of the Magic Wand
The first mention of a magic wand is believed to be in the Bible, where the rod of Aaron and the staff of Moses are mentioned. Several paintings and works of literature have featured magic wands since then. For example, The Odyssey by Homer talks about a goddess, Circe, who has a magic wand called a rhabdos that turns men into animals!
Wands abound in Egyptian and Greek mythology, with different Gods having their own special wands. In fact, Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, had a rod which is featured in the logo of the World Health Organization!
Then we have Harry Potter and other modern works of art, which have made magic wands more mainstream. Traditionally, wands were supposed to be made from the wood of trees like almond, apple, cedar, elder, elm, maple, or oak. But don’t worry, we’ve got something easier for you!
We’ve done some magic of our own and turned a wand into a pencil topper! Here is a super simple and sparkly star wand pencil topper craft that doesn’t need wood – just some paper, glitter foam and you’re good to go!

Supplies required:
- Thick, heavyweight craft paper in different colors
- Medium-weight craft paper in different colors
- Glitter paper or foam
- Pencil
- Craft glue
- A pair of scissors
How to make the Star Wand Pencil Topper Craft:
1. Download and print the Star Wand Pencil Topper Template. The template includes two large star patterns, a smaller star and long strips of varying lengths.

2. Trace the parts of the pattern on craft paper and cut them out. The weight of the craft paper matters because if you use thin paper, your star wand pencil topper will fall apart. Choose a thick, heavyweight paper for the big star patterns, and glitter paper for the small star. Use medium-weight paper for the strips, making sure you cut them from paper of different colors.

3. Start by sticking the small glittery star on one of the big star cutouts. This is now the front of your star wand pencil topper.

4. Turn the craft over to the other side. Apply glue along two adjacent sides of the star, as shown below.

5. Start sticking the strips on the glued area.

6. Mix up the lengths and the colors and keep them close together for a more ‘lush’ appearance.

7. Once all the strips are attached, apply glue along the remaining sides of the star, except the two sides right next to the one with the strips. Look at the image below for reference.

8. Place the other big star cutout on the glued star so that the glued ends of the strips are completely hidden.

9. Turn your star over and let the glue dry completely. Your star wand pencil topper is complete!

To use the star wand pencil topper, insert a pencil through the gap created by the sides you left out in Step 7.

How pretty is your star wand pencil topper! This is a great New Year craft to ring in the year with some magic, and it also works well for a fairy or princess party. You can also give it to your friends as a back-to-school gift or use it as a stocking stuffer. Homework time is about to get much more magical!
