When you think of loving animals, many of us think of cute puppies and kittens, or maybe a calf or even a tiger cub. However, few of us would think of frogs among this list, and while they’re not mammals, they still belong to the animal kingdom!

If you’re a person to run when you spot a frog, you’re not alone! Most people don’t really consider frogs as pet material, although there are some fans. And when you learn more about this amazing creature, you’ll be intrigued too!

Why are frogs important to us?
Frogs eat pests and disease-causing insects, protecting humans and other creatures
They’re a food source for birds, snakes, fish and other creatures
Due to their sensitive skin, frog populations are an early warning sign of environmental issues
Frogs’ skin secretions have many medicinal benefits, including fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria

To celebrate these amazing creatures, there’s a special day dedicated to them – World Frog Day on 20th March. Frogs are endangered today due to climate change and other reasons. So let’s fight back by learning more about frogs – we’ve got to admit, we don’t really know much about them other than the fact that they have webbed feet and that they jump! When someone is all hot and sweaty, people tend to say, “You’re sweating like a pig!” You’d think that this is because pigs sweat a lot, when in reality, pigs don’t even have sweat glands!

Apparently, the term doesn’t have anything to do with pigs at all; instead, it refers to raw iron, also called ‘pig iron’ in the iron smelting process. As the hot pig iron cools, small beads of moisture form on its surface, making it look like it’s sweating. Now you know how pigs sweat!

“The continued existence of wildlife and wilderness is important to the quality of life of humans.” – Jim Fowler

When we were kids, a tiger was just another wild animal. It was there in many places and you could easily visit a zoo to see one. We never imagined that by the time we grew up and had kids of our own, the tiger would be classified as an endangered animal.

Thankfully, due to all the awareness campaigns and active community efforts, tiger numbers are now increasing, but we still have a long way to go. And it’s not just about tigers, it’s about wildlife in general, threatened by human activities like deforestation, poaching, and industrialization.

That’s why we have many days dedicated to wildlife scattered throughout the year – from World Wildlife Day on 3rd March to Wildlife Conservation Day on 4th December. The idea behind these special days is to encourage young people around the world to unite and tackle the biggest challenges to wildlife.

As with everything, the best way to begin is with books!

Kids’ Books about Wildlife
The Wilderness War by Julia Green
Yucky Worms by Vivian French
Wild Life: The Extraordinary Adventures of Sir David Attenborough by Leisa Stewart-Sharpe
One Day in the Tropical Rain Forest by Jean Craighead George
Be a Neighbourhood Naturalist by Labonie Roy, Vena Kapoor, Suhel Quader

It’s a good idea to combine these books with some hands-on activities to help kids learn about wildlife, their habitats and how human interference can affect the natural cycle of things. Here are some easy and interesting wildlife theme activities for kids to try at home!

“Nature’s great masterpiece, an elephant; the only harmless great thing.” ~ John Donne

Do you like elephants? It’s amazing that despite being the largest mammals on land, elephants are considered cute, especially baby elephants!

Elephants are pretty awesome animals, and like John Donne said, they’re very gentle beings. An elephant can pick up everything from a coin to a tree with that trunk. They use their trunks to express love and to fight. Also, did you know that besides humans, elephants are the only animals to grieve for the dead?

Elephants are also an important part of Indian culture and history. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of ornately decorated elephants mounted by the kings of yore, and as part of the Republic Day parade in modern times. They also feature predominantly in religious and cultural celebrations like Ganesh Chathurthi, Mysore Dasara or Thrissur Pooram.

So it’s only fair that we appreciate these amazing animals, especially since 22nd September is Elephant Appreciation Day. And we’ve got a whole bunch of elephant crafts for kids to make, for this special day or for World Elephant Day, which falls on 12th August. And consider how cool these animals are, you don’t really need a special occasion to celebrate them!

Have you watched The Lion King yet? It was one of my favorite movies growing up, and it makes me so glad to be able to catch it again with my own child!

When I watched the 1994 version, I was a huge fan of Simba – the kid version. I wasn’t too keen to have him grow up into a great big lion with a mane and everything. I guess that’s how I feel about my own cub now!!

The lion is the King of the Jungle, and there are a few reasons why. Here are a few fun facts about these amazing animals.

Fun Facts about Lions
There are two main lion subspecies – the African lion and the Asiatic lion
Not all male lions have manes – some African lions are maneless, to adapt to the local climate
Cubs grow up together as part of a pride, and suckle from any lioness in the group
Lions eat a lot in a single meal – up to a quarter of their own weight, nearly 40 kg
Besides meat, lions also consume plants for hydration

The forests are calling! It’s the International Day of Forests this 21st March, and we’re celebrating with a bunch of fascinating forest crafts for kids!

I often feel that with every passing generation, children lose touch with nature more and more. While kids of my grandparents’ generations spent nearly all day outdoors, kids of today spend just a couple of hours or so if they feel like it.

Maintaining a relationship with nature is essential for kids. For one, it gives them an idea of wonders of the natural world, of which they’re also a part. It teaches them the art of co-existing peacefully, how each creature has its own place, as well as how each plant or animal blooms or flies in its own time.

Besides these, the natural world also shows us how dependent we are for many of the things we have taken for granted today. And forests have a big role to play here. With International Day of Forests coming up on 21st March, we think it’s an excellent opportunity to learn about how important forests are, and about all the things we use whose original source is the forest. Let’s go on a virtual forest adventure.

And that brings us to the cheetah – the fastest animal on land! With a speed of 110 kph, this is an animal that almost flies! However, the cheetah is now the No. 1 endangered cat in Africa, which is why the theme of this year’s International Cheetah Day on 4th December is #SavetheCheetah.
