For the longest time, I actually thought that Robin Hood was a fox, thanks to Disney’s version of the iconic tale. Only later did I realize this was a character from English folklore – and definitely a human one!
However, I can see the logic behind using a fox to represent Robin Hood – the outlaw who is sly and clever, but not at all bad! For generations now, foxes have been used to represent cunning and smartness, and you’ll find this symbolism in the folklore of many cultures – Mesopotamian, Finnish, Bulgarian, Russian, African Dogon and more!
5 Fun Facts about Foxes:
- Although foxes are canines, they prefer being alone and don’t live in packs like other members of the family
- Foxes have excellent hearing – they can hear a watch ticking from as far as 36 meters away
- Red foxes are similar to dogs, which is obvious, but grey foxes are more similar to cats
- Foxes are abundant in cities too, living under sheds and even railway embankments
- Small groups of foxes are called a ‘leash of foxes’ or a ‘skulk of foxes’
